Braces?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child first be seen by an orthodontist as early as age 7; earlier if a problem is discovered by a parent or family dentist. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if treated prior to the completion of growth. Early treatment may prevent the need for extraction of permanent teeth, surgery and other serious corrections later in life. Early treatment helps to make room for the permanent teeth to come in properly. However, owing to the complex nature of orthodontics, early treatment may not be right for every child. Only after a clinical examination of your child can the proper treatment plan be determined.

By the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, an orthodontist can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, open bite, crowding or gummy smiles. Timely screening increases the chances for an incredible smile. Early orthodontic treatment varies between patients, but may include removable or fixed appliances that can provide more room for crowded, erupting teeth; preserve space for unerupted teeth; create facial symmetry through manipulating jaw growth; and reduce overall treatment time in braces. When orthodontic intervention is not necessary, an orthodontist can carefully monitor growth and development and begin treatment when it is ideal.

Does your child suck his or her thumb or fingers? Sucking is a natural reflex. Infants, babies and young children use thumbs, fingers, pacifiers and other objects on which to suck. It makes them feel secure and happy and provides a sense of security at difficult periods. Since thumb sucking is relaxing, it may induce sleep. Thumb sucking that persists beyond the eruption of the permanent teeth can cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth and tooth alignment. Children should stop thumb sucking by the time their permanent front teeth are ready to erupt. Usually, children stop between the ages of two and four. Peer pressure causes many school-aged children to stop. An orthodontist can also help you and your child to create a program that will empower your child and motivate them to stop their habit.

Adult Orthodontic Treatment:

Orthodontic treatment is not just for children! The goal of orthodontic treatment is a good bite—meaning straight teeth that mesh well with the teeth in the opposite jaw. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain. Orthodontic treatment at later stages in life can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. A healthy bite is as important at age 60 as it is at age 16! Advances in orthodontic techniques and appliances have made treatment more comfortable, with greatly reduced discomfort levels and a decreased frequency of visits. A variety of orthodontic appliances are available today, including traditional metal braces, tooth colored braces, braces that go behind the teeth, and clear aligners. Be sure to speak with an orthodontist about the best way to achieve your treatment goals. You will soon be on your way to improving your best asset—your smile!!

Retainers! Retainers! Retainers!

Finally!! Free From Braces!!

What Now?

 Image

essixSo now you are free of your braces, and you want to keep your teeth straight.  It is a must that you wear your retainers.  Here, at iSmile Orthodontics we offer clear retainers after your treatment with us and you may have a few questions like:

Q: Why do I have to wear a retainer, I wore braces for two years?

A: Naturally, your teeth will want to return back to its original formation (relapse).  Wearing the retainer will help stop the teeth from shifting after treatment.  It is also imperative to wear it as a young person finishing treatment.  This is because as you grow your teeth are also shifting and retention will help hold your teeth in place and maintain your perfect smile.

Q: Do I have to wear retainers all the time?

A: It takes about a year for the bone tissues and the bone to stabilize and reform to the teeth movement.  Generally our doctors, here at iSmile Orthodontics, say that for the first three months wearing the retainer, then soon after result to wearing the retainer only at night.

Q: Is the retainer metal?

A: The retainer that iSmile Orthodontics uses is a clear essix retainer.  retainter

Q: How do I take care of it?

A: The best way to take care of your essix is to put it in the case that is provided for you. Putting it in a napkin is a bad idea, because it is likely that it will end up in the garbage.  The only time when the essix should be in the case and not in the mouth is while eating and brushing.  Generally the only thing that you are able to drink while wearing the essix retainer is water. To clean the retainer, only cold water is used.  Hot or warm water will only ruin the formation of the plastic and therefore no longer be the true shape of the teeth.  Gentle brushing with toothpaste and a tooth brush or even hand washing with dish soap works great!

However if your retainer breaks, or is lost, call your local iSmile Orthodontics and speak with our doctors about getting a new one.

Ask about our lingual retainers! A great contribution to you retention after treatment!

Orthodontic Myths

“My family dentist said they would do my braces”
Orthodontists have an extra 2-3 years of specialized education and training in tooth and jaw function. Would you get brain surgery from a physician who operates on a brain once or twice a year? I would hope not.

“I am too old for braces.”
There is no age limit for to receive orthodontic treatment! The reality is that age doesn’t matter; health does. Tooth movement can be achieved quite successfully, no matter how old the patient may be, so long as teeth, gums, and bone are in good shape.

“Orthodontics hurts.”
Orthodontics does not require needles or drilling into teeth, so there is no need for that fear. There is, however, an initial period of adjustment to the appliance in your mouth. Also, each visit requires a specific approach to movement, so there may some pressure felt after each monthly visit. An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory will help with any discomfort.

“I can’t play sports with braces.”
Of course you can! For your own safety, be sure to wear a mouth guard when playing contact sports.  Not only will a mouth guard save your teeth, but may also protect against jaw fractures. You may buy one at a local pharmacy, or ask the staff at iSmile Orthodontics for one during your next visit.

“Braces will set off a metal detector.”
Braces are made from lightweight materials, so it will not affect metal detectors.

“Braces will rust in your mouth.”
Orthodontic materials are made from surgical stainless steel, nickel, copper, cobalt and Chromium,so they cannot rust. Please notify your Orthodontist if you have an allergy to any of these metals.

“Braces cost too much money.”
Orthodontic treatment is the most conservative cosmetic procedure to align teeth for a healthy and beautiful smile for patients of all ages! It can be accomplished with minimal discomfort, in a reasonable time period with lasting results. At iSmile Orthodontics, we are in network with most Insurance companies, and work with our patients to offer interest-free financing. Our staff is knowledgeable of the dental insurance companies offering benefits for orthodontic coverage, so do not hesitate to call and ask.

“Braces increase my chance of being struck by lightning.”
Whether you have braces or not your chances of getting struck by lightning remain the same, which is 1 in 700,000 according to National Geographic.

Do not ever hesitate to contact the knowledgeable staff at iSmile Orthodontics with any question or concern you may have regarding Orthodontic treatment. Keep in mind that a consultation is always free or charge! We participate with most Dental Insurance Companies, as well as offer interest-free financing- if there is a will, there is a way.

SPEED Braces…Better? Faster? Stronger?

Many have heard of a system used in Orthodontics called “self-ligating braces” and have been told it is the latest technology, promised a much more rapid treatment time, and better oral hygiene. While it may mean less visits to the Orthodontist, finishing treatment with this system may take longer than expected. This is due to the lack of control with this type of bracket, especially when it comes to rotations. This system of self-ligating brackets is also known as SPEED System, The Damon System, and In-Ovation, works by applying light and constant pressure to the teeth allowing the wire to slide into a “door” on the bracket, holding it in place. Seems innovative, but despite popular belief, self-ligating brackets were first created in the 1930’s, re-surfaced in the 1970’s, and have recently become more popular with, what appears to be, a promise of convenience. What many people do not take into consideration once they hear about “the latest technology”, is that innovation comes with a high price tag. Also, keep in mind that many insurance companies do not cover the cost of braces with self-ligating brackets. These brackets are also more fragile than normal to the fidgety patient as well- “doors” on the bracket may break or pop open open if you are touching your brackets; whereas, with traditional braces, a broken bracket is only evident in patients who do not comply with food restrictions, or those with bad oral habits. At iSmile Orthodontics, we believe in using the best products and technology for our patients, and that means standing by what has and will always work more effectively for our patients. We are able to promise the best result possible from a tailored treatment plan made to suit each and every one of our unique patients. Living with Braces

At iSmile Orthodontics of White Plains and Yonkers, we heavily stress compliance with scheduled appointments, oral hygiene, and being aware of foods you should not eat to avoid breakage. Braces are fixed orthodontic appliances that, while sturdy, are very vulnerable to breakage when the patient is not compliant with food restrictions. At times, though, there is so much focus on foods you can’t eat (i.e. sticky, chewy, crunchy, hard foods) and not enough focus on food that can be eaten comfortably with braces. Just to give you an idea of the foods you CAN eat, you are more than welcome to enjoy soft chicken, meatballs, sandwiches with soft bread, jell-o, pudding, pasta, seafood without bones, ice cream without nuts, soft fruits, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, soft rice, beans, and pancakes. If you do happen to break a bracket, make sure to call your White Plains Orthodontist or Yonkers Orthodontist to schedule a repair as soon as possible. Keep in mind too that each break may extend your treatment time for about one month or two. As far as discomfort from wearing braces goes, it will not last forever! You may take over-the-counter pain relievers, rinse with warm salt water, or consume cold foods and drinks. Always remember that the doctors and staff at iSmile Orthodontics is always here to answer any questions you may have about your braces. Never hesitate to call your White Plains Orthodontist or Yonkers Orthodontist if something is bothering you, or if you are unsure of anything! We are here for you and your smile, every step of the way. 🙂

Invisalign Teen – What it Is, How it Works

Invisalign Teen takes a unique approach to straightening teeth using a series of custom-made, removable, clear aligners that gradually and gently shift the teeth into place based on the exact movements your orthodontist plans out. The aligner trays are smooth and comfortable and there are no brackets or wires to tighten. Your teen simply pops in a new set of aligners every two weeks or so until the treatment is complete and he or she achieves the confident smile he/she has always wanted. Teenagers enjoy wearing Invisalign due to the fact that the aligners are nearly invisible and because there are less office visits required since there are no wires that need adjusting.

Advantages of Invisalign

When Invisalign is compared to other teeth straightening options, the advantages are very clear. For one, Invisalign can effectively treat a wide variety of cases including crowded teeth, spaces between teeth, crossbites, overbites and underbites. And, because the aligners are removable, your teen can eat whatever foods he or she enjoys as the aligners can be taken out while eating and then put back in when done. Your teenager also will be able to brush and floss his or her teeth normally for much better overall oral hygiene throughout the treatment process.

When regular braces are worn, your teen can experience pain, discomfort, mouth sores or injuries caused by the wires. There can also be tooth decay from inadequate brushing & flossing and a build up of plaque because it can be difficult to brush and floss well with traditional braces. All these things can be avoided with Invisalign Teen. Additionally, because the aligners can be removed when eating, your child will be able to enjoy the foods he or she loves such as pizza, hard-crusted breads, corn on the cob, apples and more.

The Invisalign Teen aligners feature a small, inconspicuous Blue Dot wear indicator that tells your child when it’s time for a new set of aligners. Invisalign Teen also provides up to six free replacement aligners in case your child loses or breaks an aligner.

Young People Love Wearing Invisalign Teen

A growing number of young people are wearing Invisalign Teen today because of the many advantages this teeth straightening option provides. Young people who wear Invisalign Teen love the fact that they’re able to take the aligners out for special occasions like school photos and then simply pop them back in when done.

Invisalign Teen is ideal for the busy teenager who may be self-conscious about wearing conventional metal braces. Of all the other orthodontic treatment options out there, none offers the level of comfort, convenience and confidence provided by Invisalign Teen. Your child is sure to appreciate how this revolutionary approach to orthodontic treatment has minimal interference in how he/she lives, looks and feels.

The iSmile Orthodontics team strives to provide the highest quality care possible to ensure that each of our patients leaves with a beautiful, healthy smile and superior results.
